A tender, hopeful story about growing up during wartime.

It’s 1965.

The United States is fighting a war against Communism in Vietnam, LBJ is in the White House, and CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite is “the most trusted man in America.”

But for twelve-year-old Sydney Carter, there are also Trixie Belden mysteries, her friend group “The Rat Finks,” her dog Por’Nada, The Beatles, and visits to her grandparents in Texas. She spends the rest of her free time writing letters to her father, an Army captain who has been deployed to Saigon.

When her father’s letters cease, Sydney is convinced the U.S. Army has made a big mistake. But who can she turn to?

Dear Mr. Cronkite,

You don’t know me, but I know who you are. I watch you on the CBS news most nights, like almost everyone else in America. My mom says people trust you.
“I literally couldn't put it down. This is a novel to encourage!” Gary D. Schmidt Author of The Wednesday Wars
“Poignant, heartbreaking, and rich with historical detail, Dear Mr. Cronkite is the deeply moving story of an inspiring young girl and her refusal to give up hope... for her father, or for the war-torn world at large.” -Kate Albus Author of A Place to Hang the Moon

PUBLISHER, WAXWING BOOKS

Dear Mr. Cronkite is a moving story, told exclusively in letters, that tackles tricky topics with deep care and nuance… war, trust, grief, and hope. And I can’t resist a story that finds hope at the darkest times.

Author Patricia Hinley pours her own heart and personal experience as a child of the Vietnam era onto every page.

Dear Mr. Cronkite is perfect for readers who love The Wednesday Wars, When You Reach Me, and The Watsons Go to Birmingham — 1963.

At Waxwing, we believe that books help us love each other better—and this one is no exception. It’s a profoundly human story, and highlights the many unexpected relationships that help us process the ups and downs of life.

Patricia Hinely

Patricia, known as Tricia by her friends, was born and raised an “army brat” and moved frequently. She counted on the library to be her constant friend wherever she was in the world. She’s an avid letter writer. One of her most prized responses is a personal letter from Walter Farley, author of The Black Stallion.

After a brief career as a children’s librarian, Tricia home educated her four children. She resides in Longwood, Florida with her husband. Dear Mr. Cronkite is her first book.
